Lumene partners with Sulapac for sustainable plastic-free skincare jar

The Finnish cosmetics brand has collaborated with hardware innovation start-up Sulapac on a pilot project to sustainably package two of its most popular skincare products Nordic-C [VALO] Glow Reveal and Nordic Hydra Moisturizer [LÄHDE] Intense Hydration 24H moisturizing cream.

Both products will be packaged in Sulapac jars made from FSC-certified wood chips from industrial sidestreams and plant-based materials. The inner liner of the jar is made of the world’s first barrier technology for cosmetics made of industrially compostable material that protects the sensitive cosmetic product.

Until now, the main challenge of using bio-based materials in jars has been the rapid evaporation of moisture, which is why it has not been seen as a viable solution for bio-based cosmetics. water. Through this pilot, we are investing in the future of innovation in the cosmetics industry, says Essi Arola, Research and Development Manager, Packaging at Lumene.

According to Sulapac, it took four years of scientific development and testing to create an innovative pot of industrially compostable material capable of housing a water-based formula. Sulapac’s design philosophy is to mimic nature – similar to the same sized piece of wood left on the forest floor, Sulapac jars can be digested by natural microorganisms and break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass, without leaving traces.

The products will be available worldwide on Lumene’s online store and select stores in Finland.
